A Little About
Cindy Filipenko

For more than three decades, I’ve helped organizations and individuals tell compelling stories for a variety of media. I am passionate about endeavours and individuals that are changing the social landscape, challenging conventions, and making the world more equitable. I love the opportunity to profile and promote the people and places that are working for positive social change.

I have written for print, TV, film, stage, radio and online applications. I have developed innovative communications projects, provided manuscript coverage and editorial support and ghost-written two books. I have also been the editor of a biweekly newsmagazine, headed an animation studio development department, been a beat journalist, story-edited dozens of screenplays, developed TV pitches and show bibles, and co-created two original, award-winning, animated series.

Since 2012, I have worked extensively with First Nations governments and organizations to address their communications needs. Among the projects I have developed are thematic, culturally-relevant annual reports, branding kits, a campaign to address lateral violence that saw its poster, “How to Live a Decolonized Life,” go viral (130,000+ views), a CD of songs and stories that garnered a Native American Music Award for best Heritage/Language Recording, and a field guide to Southern Stl’atl’imx botanical resources and seasonal life, now in its third printing.

I have also developed collateral for immigration, transportation, and civic award initiatives for the City of Vancouver, and created an online presence for the International Institute of Sustainable Development’s Comprehensive Wealth project, which considered a new framework for measuring national wealth.

Whether creating a communications strategy, collateral package, or applying a final polish to the script for a marketing video, I take an inquisitive and collaborative approach. I work closely with clients to develop trusting, creatively open relationships that help ensure that visions are fully realized.

I am a member of the Writers Guild of Canada and SACD, and also hold the record for number of cover stories for the feminist quarterly, Herizons Magazine.
